The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is taking concrete steps to certify Malawi’s international airports, with new regulations already at the Ministry of Justice for drafting.
Speaking during a Board orientation on Friday, Acting Director General for CAA, Samuel Kalua, disclosed that the Authority is developing guidance material for airport certification while proactively training inspectors to build internal capacity.
“We are also engaging with other member states to seek technical assistance where we face shortages of qualified inspectors,” he said adding that plans are underway to recruit additional inspectors, while new regulations will address regulatory gaps to strengthen oversight.

Board Chairperson, Rev. Baxter Maulidi, said the orientation exposed critical gaps in aviation security and certification requiring immediate attention. He stressed the need to strengthen regulatory oversight and address security weaknesses to maintain compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
“The board will prioritise airport certification, align reforms with Agenda 2063, and adopt innovative approaches to overcome financial constraints while enhancing Malawi’s aviation standing,” Rev. Maulidi said.
