The newly constituted Board of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has concluded a comprehensive three-day technical orientation workshop aimed at reinforcing aviation oversight and regulatory effectiveness in Malawi. The workshop, held from 18th to 20th February 2026, focused on equipping Board members with a deeper understanding of the Authority’s legal mandate and operational responsibilities.
Central to the discussions was Malawi’s compliance with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Board members emphasized that aviation is a highly technical and safety-sensitive sector that demands strict adherence to international regulations. They noted that any weaknesses in certification, licensing, or regulatory oversight could compromise safety and adversely affect Malawi’s international reputation and standing within the global aviation community.
Certification of Malawi’s airports that handle scheduled international flights was one of the key issues that was discussed. To ensure a clear understanding of the process, CAA Management presented the internationally recognized five-phase airport certification framework, outlining the technical, safety, and compliance requirements that must be met. The Board underscored the importance of ensuring that all eligible airports meet these standards as part of Malawi’s broader commitment to aviation safety and regulatory excellence.
In anticipation of growth within the aviation sector, including fleet expansion by Malawian Airlines, the Board proposed structured engagement meetings with industry stakeholders. Members stressed that expansion in airline operations must be matched by strengthened regulatory capacity to maintain effective safety oversight.
The workshop also highlighted the need to enhance public awareness of the Authority’s regulatory role. The Board recommended the development of a structured Public Awareness Strategy and the strengthening of the CAA’s communication function to promote transparency, build public trust, and improve stakeholder understanding of the Authority’s mandate.
The orientation workshop marks a significant step in positioning the CAA to uphold international standards, strengthen institutional capacity, and ensure safe and sustainable growth of Malawi’s aviation sector.
